Call for Papers
Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858) is a neglected figure of interest to a range of research areas including women’s professional writing, the promotion of science and women’s education and speculative fiction. She is best known for The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827) and Gardening for Ladies (1840). The conference intends to explore the life, work and example of Jane Webb Loudon in the context of women and science in the nineteenth century. It therefore seeks papers from various disciplinary perspectives on fictional and non-fictional contributions by women to the formation of popular scientific awareness during the nineteenth century.
We welcome proposals for contributions on the following topics:

SFRA 2010: Call for Proposals

The 2010 Science Fiction Research Association conference theme, “Far Stars and Tin Stars: Science Fiction and the Frontier,” reflects the conference’s venue in the high desert of Carefree, Arizona, north of Phoenix. The frontier, the borderland between what is known and what is unknown, the settled and the wild, the mapped and the unexplored, is as central to science fiction as it is to the mythology of the American West.
Submissions are invited for individual papers (15-20 minutes), full paper panels (3 papers), roundtables (80 minute sessions), and other presentations that explore the study and teaching of science fiction in any medium. Preference will be given to proposals that engage the conference theme.
Paper and other session proposals should be 200-300 words. Paper panel proposals should include the proposals of all three papers and a brief statement of their unifying principle. Include all text of the proposal in the body of the email (not as an attachment). De acordo com a sinopse (abaixo), alguma coincidência com o longa brasileiro Abrigo Nuclear (1981), de Roberto Pires.
A 20 min Sc-Fi film about futuristic Africa, 35 years after World War III “The Water War”.
Nature is extinct. The outside is dead. Asha lives and works as a museum curator in one of the indoor communities set up by the Maitu Council. When she receives a box in the mail containing soil, she plants an old seed in it and the seed starts to germinate instantly. Asha appeals to the Council to grant her permission to investigate the possibility of life on the outside but the Council denies her exit visa. Asha breaks out of the inside community to go into the dead and derelict outside to plant the growing seedling and possibly find life on the outside.

Une avant-première mondiale : la version longue inédite du chef-d'oeuvre de Fritz Lang, présentée en ciné-concert à la 60e édition du Festival du film de Berlin.
Joh Fredersen règne sur Metropolis, une gigantesque cité futuriste dont le confort et les jardins idylliques sont réservés à une élite. Dans les entrailles de la terre vit une population d'ouvriers, d'esclaves rivés à une machine qui les broie. Freder, le fils du despote, découvre par hasard ces conditions de travail inhumaines et aussi la belle Maria, une égérie qui prêche des valeurs proches du christianisme primitif. Freder en tombe amoureux sur-le-champ. Mais son père a lui aussi eu vent de l'existence de la jeune femme...
Des scènes inédites
Quatre-vingt-trois ans après sa première mondiale, le chef-d'oeuvre muet de Fritz Lang vient de renaître dans sa version d'origine que l'on croyait perdue à jamais. Restauré dans tout son éclat par la Fondation Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau, ce Metropolis est projeté ce soir en avant-première au Friedrichstadtpalast de Berlin, au cours d'un ciné-concert diffusé en direct par ARTE, avec une musique originale interprétée par l'Orchestre symphonique de la Radio de Berlin. Si l'intrigue du film reste la même dans cette version longue, vingt-cinq minutes de scènes inédites rendent l'histoire plus compréhensible, notamment, l'équipée en voiture de Georgy à travers la cité, la visite de Freder et du "Mince" chez Josaphat, des images hédonistes des jardins et de Yoshiwara, la scène où la jalousie de Joh Fredersen et Rotwang éclate au grand jour...
